the following replies were received.

Telstra Directory Assistance 1223/12455 is an automated service that provides telephone numbers to callers when they know the name of who they are looking for. Calls to 1223 and 12455 are free from a Telstra residential fixed line and cost 44c from a business and mobile services. The Call Connect option is available from Telstra fixed lines for $1.10 plus cost of connected call.

Telstra is obliged under Telstra Carrier Licence Conditions (Telstra Corporation Limited) Declaration 1997 to make directory assistance services available to its customers. Calls to Telstra Directory Assistance service 1223 are free for residential callers. Under the Telstra Carrier Charges - Price Control Arrangements, Notification and Disallowance Determination, Telstra cannot impose a charge for a directory assistance service unless it is notified to the Minister at least 30 days before commencement of the charge. The Minister can disallow that charge during those 30 days.

BOTTOM LINE If Calling Directory Assistance on 1223 from a Residential Fixed Line (not get transferred) and the call is FREE.
